The vast majority of the 50 million people in Myanmar depend on rice as their primary food source. Most of the country’s rice fields are located at low elevations and are increasingly threatened by rising sea levels. The Myanmar Engineering Society saw the need to prepare an alternative staple to rice and chose breadfruit, realizing its superior nutritional value and ability to tolerate salty soils. Hundreds of trees have been sent to Myanmar in an effort to introduce the population to a healthier and more sustainable staple.
