The National Tropical Botanical Garden’s Breadfruit Institute created The Plant a Tree of Life – Grow ‘Ulu Project, which distributed 4,788 Ma’afala breadfruit trees throughout six Hawaiian islands. A total of 163 organizations and groups participated, including 45 schools, 14 churches, and numerous organizations that work with native Hawaiians; other Pacific Islanders; and low-income residents. This project significantly contributed to food security and sustainability in Hawaii as the trees were planted in rural, urban and community landscapes throughout the state.
