Nicaragua
It wasn’t difficult for a former agronomist and entomologist from the International Cooperation Center in Agronomic Research for Development to realize the potential for breadfruit in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Working with a local Agroforestry Center, breadfruit was incorporated into the 65 hectare collection of tropical plant species on the Atlantic coast. There, the fruit is distributed to hungry families throughout the area. The intention of this project is to demonstrate the impact breadfruit can have on hunger and poverty in Nicaragua, encouraging replication of projects like it throughout all of Latin America.
